d1-driver, the amplifier driver

The d1-driver is an analog driver. It is usually connected to the output of the DAC.
It is an answer to the endless question "is it better with or without preamp?".
The strength of preamps is there active stage more than their volume control. The active stage helps driving the power amp.
Traditional preamps have been designed when people had several analog sources: LP, cassette, FM tuner, CD player...
Some of us still use LP today, in this case you can connect the LP via a Digital to Analog converter to the DAC, or keep a traditional preamp.
A d1-driver can also be added in the chain between the DAC and a traditional preamp to improve the sound of the DAC.
Many of us use just a DAC as source. The d1-driver is the solution in this case to get the best sound, the lowest noise and the most friendly volume control from a Totaldac DAC remote.

Its drive capability allows the d1-driver to improve the sound of a DAC, improving bass control, articulation, presence, soundstage and life.
It has been tested when connected between a DAC and a power amplifier (transistor or tube), but also between a DAC and an integrated amplifier.
The d1-driver has no volume control because it relies on the DAC volume control.
It has been tested in association with the d1-core up to the d1-direct and d1-twelve DACs, with a big sound improvement even with DACs having a 3.3V output and 40ohm output impedance.

New possibility from 2019 for LP users: the Totaldac Amp-1 power amplifier can have 2 pairs of RCA inputs and a switch to choose a full digital source (DAC + d1-driver) or a full analog source (LP + preamp).

"Le ressenti dynamique progesse autant en régime macro qu'en régime micro.
L'illusion d'y être est superbe.
Comme d'habitude avec un Totaldac, on est happé par cette définition pure qui s'installe, par ce naturel qui vous hypnotise, par cette transparence qui vous fait découvrir les méandres encore insoupçonnés d'un accord ou de l'intention d'un artiste."

Totaldac d1-dual front

-voltage gain: 0dB gain (x1 factor) or 10dB gain (x3 factor), chosen on order
-RCA inputs and outputs by default. Balanced XLR are possible when using two d1-driver-XLR in monoblocs configuration
-very high bias current class A design for a natural low output impedance and low distorsion
-very high grade components in the signal path, some of them custom made.
-extreme low noise due to discrete design (no IC at all) and external power supply, matching the noise of d1-twelve DAC
-very easy input impedance: 1MegaOhm
-natural low output impedance plus added 40ohm pure resitor for a perfect interconnect impedance matching
-can drive anything above 100ohm without distorsion
-distorsion: 0.0025%
-frequency cut-off at -3dB: 2.5MHz
-using 0.01% VAR Bulk Metal® Foil resistors from Vishay in critical parts of circuit
-signal ground can be connected to the earth or left floating, to avoid any ground loop noise
-aluminium and PMMA enclosure with massive pure copper antivibration plate
-power consumption 20W
-main box dimensions: height 110mm, width 360mm, depth 290mm
-power supply dimensions: height 65mm, width 122mm, depth 180mm
-weight: 7kg

Available options:
-0dB or 10dB voltage gain.
-two pairs of RCA outputs for a subwoofer or a headphone amplifier or for bi-amping.
-one pair of unbalanced XLR outputs, extra to the pair of RCA outputs, like the d1-direct DAC.
-balanced configuration, using two d1-driver-XLR (equipped with XLR connectors).
-silver massive aluminium front panel.
-115V power option.
